Summer volunteer program gives teens hands-on hospital experience

Posted: Updated:

A new program from Paradise Valley Hospital is giving teens a hands-on volunteer hospital experience this summer.

The volunteer program will let teens donate their time and talents at Abrazo Health's Arrowhead Hospital, Arizona Heart Hospital and West Valley Hospital. The program is an extension of Paradise Valley High School's Certified Nursing Assistant program, but any teen is welcome to enroll in the volunteer program.

Students in the program will get valuable experience in the medical field. They will help will various responsibilities including escorting patients for tests and clerical duties. Volunteers will learn about nursing, radiology and more.

"Most health programs now require you to have some shadowing hours or volunteer hours in a hospital-based program," Paradise Valley High School Certified Nursing Assistant program instructor Allison Latzo said. "This has really prepared them for their future and what they want to be with networking, communication, all that kind of stuff."

Volunteers will work a minimum of one four-hour shift for eight of the ten weeks between May 26 and Aug. 2. The deadline to enroll in the program is 4 p.m. on March 19, and late applications will not be considered.
