PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The USO is celebrating their 74th birthday today, and children from the YMCA are delivering 100 thank you notes to the Sky Harbor USO facility to show their support and appreciation for troops.

"When the local community gets behind our service members, it’s a fantastic show of appreciation for what we do and the sacrifices that we make," Arizona Army National Guard Chief Warrant Officer 5 John Vitt said. "That just says that our community is behind us and they support what we’re doing, it’s phenomenal."

The YMCA was one of six nonprofit organizations that initially formed the USO in 1941, and helped continue that support for troops by celebrating the birthday this year. The notes are meant to uplift soldiers as they pass through the USO seeking rest and a place to unwind during their travels.

"It’s a wonderful thing for them to come into. The USO is a home away from home for them," Phoenix USO organizer Tara Morgan said. "For them to be able to come through here and look at these cards and know that people are supporting them, it makes them feel really good."
