3OYS Update: Sensible Home Warranty customers may get reimbursed

PHOENIX  -- Danelle New is just one of many consumers who have been profiled by 3 On Your Side. New claimed she was ripped off by a company called Sensible Home Warranty.

"Well, it's disappointing to say the least," New told 3 On Your Side back in October.

It was disappointing because New gave Sensible Home Warranty $2,100 to cover three different homes and condos that she owns. But as soon as they took her money, New said Sensible Home Warranty closed up and went out of business.

That meant that New and every other consumer around the nation who gave that company money  lost their money.

"I feel helpless," New said. "There's nothing I can do about it.  It's just my hard-earned money and it's gone."

However, consumers like New just might be able to get that money back.

It's all thanks to the Arizona Department of Insurance. The agency, which regulates warranty companies, just announced that it has a pool of money that it  can use to reimburse New and other consumers.

"I'm not going to say it's a million dollars because it's obviously nowhere near an amount like that," said Yvonne Hunter, assistant director of the Department of Insurance. "But, we think it's a fair amount, given the number of claims so far." 

Hunter told 3 On Your Side that Sensible Home Warranty has been on their radar for some time now. The Department of Insurance knew the company was accumulating a large number of complaints. Sensible Home Warranty eventually earned an "F" rating with the Better Business Bureau.

"We have received numerous complaints," Hunter said. "In fact, we have received so many that we issued a cease and desist letter back in 2014."

Now, The Department of Insurance has moved on to its next step: It's asking consumers who feel they were taken advantage of by Sensible Home Warranty to fill out paperwork found on its website. That paperwork that will help reimburse customers for the money they've lost to Sensible Home Warranty. 

"We're not guaranteeing anyone that they will get paid for full reimbursement," Hunter said. "But, we are trying to narrow that pool as much as possible given the funds that are available."

If you lost money to Sensible Home Warranty and would like to file a claim with the Arizona Department of Insurance, you may be able to recover your losses.
