GLENDALE, Ariz. -- A 34-year-old Glendale man was arrested after he met a woman he thought was the mother of a 16-year-old girl he agreed to have sex with and left his 18-month-old child alone during the encounter.

Jeff Howard Buffington was arrested Friday afternoon after responding to an ad in the "women seeking men" section of

He agreed to 30 minutes of sex for $160 with the 16-year-old girl and agreed to meet at a Comfort Suites Inn at 9824 W. Camelback Road.

He was greeted by the undercover officer, who was posing as the girl's mother, and produced the money and a box of condoms. He was immediately arrested and taken to the Glendale Police Department, where he told officers his child was alone at their home on Luke Air Force Base.

Base security went to the residence and confirmed the child was alone in a crib in an upstairs bedroom.

Buffington told officers the child often naps for as long as three hours and that he was only expected to be gone for a half-hour.

He said his wife works nearly 40 minutes away from their home, and she and Child Protective Services were contacted by base security.

He said they employ a nanny, but that neither the nanny nor his wife knew the child had been left alone.

He was booked into jail on a felony count of prostitution and one felony count of child abuse.

A court order specified he could not live at the same location as a minor or have contact with his daughter.
