MORENCI, Ariz. -- A Greenlee County sheriff's deputy and a Clifton police officer were shot during a confrontation with a 29-year-old man in Morenci Monday night.

The suspect, Chris Ingram, died following the incident, which occurred on U.S. Highway 191.

Terry Fredrick with the Greenlee County Sheriff's Office said Deputy Jon Mennen and Sgt. Jason Mingura were responding to a domestic violence call at 11 p.m. when they observed the suspect driving in the area.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the law enforcement officers initiated a traffic stop and gunshots were exchanged with Ingram.

Fredrick said Mennen and Mingura were shot several times, but their injuries were not life-threatening. Both are being treated at University Medical Center in Tucson.

Ingram later died at a hospital.

Fredrick said Ingram is not from Morenci and the sheriff's office is not releasing where he is from at this time.

Mingura is a four-year veteran of the Clifton Police Department. Mennen has been with the Greenlee County Sheriff's Office for eight months.

DPS is handling the investigation.
