PHOENIX (AP) -- Former Arizona House Speaker Andy Tobin has been named to a cabinet-level post in Gov. Doug Ducey's administration.
Ducey announced Friday that Tobin will take over the state Weights and Measures Department as director. The agency's main job is to license and check the accuracy of weighing and measuring devices such as gas pumps and ensure that scanners at stores accurately reflect posted prices.
Tobin was elected to the House in 2006 and was Speaker from mid-2011 until he left the Legislature at the end of last year. The Republican from Paulden ran for Congress in 2014 in the 1st Congressional District but lost to incumbent Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick.
Ducey says Tobin's knowledge of public policy and small businesses means he'll be an asset to the department.
