PHOENIX -- A dog was killed when a fire ripped through a Phoenix home Thursday night.

Firefighters responded to the house near 42nd Avenue and Bethany Home Road shortly after 8 p.m.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Benjamin Santillan said firefighters quickly deployed attack lines and entered the home, but they were met with heavy heat and fire. He said there was no visibility.

A ladder crew was assigned to vent the roof to increase visibility inside the home.

Santillan said crews located a dog and performed CPR, but the animal did not survive.

The homeowner was home at the time but exited safely. He told firefighters he has a place to stay.

Santillan said there is extensive damage to the kitchen, family room and porch.

The cause is under investigation.
