Man in wheelchair struck, killed by vehicle in Phoenix

PHOENIX -- A man was struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing a street in a wheelchair Thursday night, according to Phoenix police.

Sgt. Jonathan Howard said the man was at or near a crosswalk at 34th Street and Thomas Road when he was hit.

Firefighters were called around 8 p.m. and found the man lying in the street in extremely critical condition. Phoenix Fire Capt. Benjamin Santillan said he suffered an extensive amount of trauma and succumbed to his injuries.

His name has not been released.

Howard said the driver remained on scene.

Police are investigating.
