PHOENIX -- A man was critically injured by a fire in a condominium early Thursday morning.

The condo was fully engulfed when Phoenix firefighters arrived at the property in the area of 52nd and Oak streets about 4:30 a.m., Capt. Ardell Deliz of the Phoenix Fire Department said.

Deliz said the victim was found in the bedroom and suffered burns to his chest and face and smoke inhalation and was taken to Maricopa County Burn Center for treatment.

Neighbors smelled smoke and saw flames coming from the condo and called 911, Deliz said.

She said there were no signs of operating smoke alarms.

Deliz said there was extensive damage to the interior and exterior of the back of the residence.

No other units were damaged, Deliz said.

No other information was available.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
