Phoenix church part of Super Bowl Super ChoirPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX – Sure, you've got Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz and John Legend all performing at the Super Bowl, which will be fantastic, but now there is a super choir that will be headlining at the NFL Experience and this Phoenix church is ready for the big time.
The Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church choir was hand-selected to be a big part of the NFL Experience leading up to Super Bowl XLIX.
"You're going to find something that's going to blow your socks off," said music director Roney Jones.
Jones got the call from the NFL to help put together a Super Bowl Super Choir.
"What you're going to feel with a hundred voices is a tremendous sound that you're not going to get anywhere else," Jones said. "A hundred voices singing together in unity, it's something amazing."
Nancy Taylor has been in the legendary choir since she was 7.
"I've been singing for probably close to 55 years," Taylor said. "This church just has a history of music. That's all I can remember even as a little kid."
The church in downtown Phoenix is famous for its singing.
"For the love of people and for the love of our community," said Lilly Brown of the Pilgrim Rest choir.
Brown and the others have performed at big events before, but nothing as big as the pre Super Bowl festivities. She is confident they'll wow the crowds.
"Absolutely, absolutely, that's what we're all about," she said. "This is Pilgrim Rest. That's what we do."
They will be joined by other church choirs from the Valley at three different shows the weekend of the big game.
Taylor has a secret to make every performance the best.
"Just sing today like this is my last time," she said.
The choir will perform at the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration at Gammage on Jan. 30. For more information visit www.superbowlgospel.com. Jones said the choir also will perform at the NFL Experience on Jan. 31 and at Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Feb. 1.
