PHOENIX -- It's hip and happening, even early in the morning, at Barrio Urbano.

Acclaimed Valley chef Silvana Salcido Esparza is best known for Barrio Cafe near 16th Street and Thomas Road. She has opened several other eateries over the past 13 years, and now she's spreading her wings with Barrio Urbano.

"I've had the fine dining Mexican, and I really have been wanting to do breakfast and breakfast proper," she said.

At Barrio Urbano, the breakfast food is full of flavor and heat -- if you can handle it. Nearly everything is made fresh.

Esparza said The Yard near Seventh Street and Montebello Avenue in central Phoenix is the perfect location for her newest venture.

"There's a fun vibe during the day, and at night it gets crazy fun," she said. "We stay open late during the weekends. We have our hot pink bar with really sexy drinks."

An open-kitchen concept gives guests an up-close look at all the action.

"I'm having a lot of young future chefs come through this kitchen, and I'm hoping to kind of move the Mexican movement forward by ... teaching what I have," she said.

And if you're craving the classic menudo dish, it's not just for breakfast. You can get it morning, noon and night -- seven days a week.

"Barrio means neighborhood, so as long as there's a neighborhood and as long as God gives me the will, I will continue to open Barrio," Esparza said.
