PHOENIX – A 17-month-old girl who was found with suspicious injuries earlier in the week has died and her mother's boyfriend has been arrested, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Detectives arrested Adrian Vincent Moreno, 26, on Friday. He was booked for one count of child abuse.

Police were called to an apartment near 48th Street and Knox Road in Ahwatukee Tuesday night for a report of an injured child. They met with Moreno and the child's mother.

Sgt. Jonathan Howard said the details the adults provided were inconsistent with the injuries the officers observed.

The child was transported to a local hospital where it was determined that she had suffered severe head and internal injuries. She died on Thursday.

Detectives have determined that Amelia Gutierrez's mother left her in the sole custody of Moreno for a brief time while she went to the store. Moreno called her while she was out and said Amelia was injured after falling from the couch.

The mother returned home and they called 911.

"Detectives developed probable cause to arrest Adrian Moreno based on the severity and type of injuries inflicted upon the victim," Howard said in a media advisory.

Howard said the investigation will continue to determine if additional charges are appropriate.
