TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Pima County officials say they have rescued nearly two dozen cats and kittens from a small mobile home.

The cats were living in unsanitary conditions and didn't have adequate ventilation, officials said.

The 23 cats were sent to a local animal shelter, but it's unclear how many of them can be adopted.

The Pima Animal Care Center says it fields about 50 calls daily from people who report concerns about animals.

The incident on Thursday was the first hoarding case this year.
