PHOENIX – Phoenix police are investigating after a 17-month-old child was found with suspicious injuries, according to a spokesman.

Police responded to a call of an injured child an apartment complex near 48th Street and Knox Road in Ahwatukee Wednesday morning.

Sgt. Jonathan Howard said the injuries occurred at the toddler's residence.

The child was transported to a local hospital Tuesday night and is in critical condition.

Neighbor Darcy Rightmire said she heard the child fell and hit her head.

"All I heard today was that it's a severe head injury. They think that there's brain damage," she said. "I mean, it was obvious they were very distraught."

No arrests have been made.
