Shoot or don't shoot? Mesa PD offers media 'hands-on' training
By Tami Hoey
MESA, Ariz. -- With recent events in Ferguson, Missouri, New York and even police shootings in Phoenix, use of force by officers is under the microscope more than ever.
Much of the criticism filters through the lens of the media. So on Tuesday, Mesa police invited Valley reporters in to participate in live action scenarios – making reporters decide: shoot or don’t shoot.
In three different scenarios, reporters played police officers, and had to arrest a suspect with a misdemeanor warrant.
But as the reporters found out, the bad guy usually doesn’t want to go to jail, and sometimes is prepared to fight back.
3TV's Jason Volentine took part in the training academy. Wearing a body camera, he acted as a police officer and was thrown into several unknown situations an officer might encounter.
