PHOENIX -- A man driving without a driver's license led police on a high-speed chase across the Valley late Thursday night.

It started at Interstate 17 and Bethany Home Road and ended on Interstate 10 and 24th Street.

An Arizona Department of Public Safety officer first tried to pull the driver over for expired plates, but he refused to stop.

The chase topped speeds of 100 mph and took DPS officers into the East Valley, where Mesa and Phoenix police helped track the vehicle on surface streets until it returned to the freeway, DPS Sgt. Alan Haywood said.

The suspect drove the wrong way at times, almost hit several vehicles and even tried to ram patrol cars, Haywood said.

Officers were also trying to determine whether the car was stolen.

Haywood said they didn't know why the suspect fled in the first place.

No one was hurt, Haywood said, adding that the investigation was continuing.
