PD: Impaired driver caused serious collision

PHOENIX -- Police say they are investigating a serious collision in northwest Phoenix that was caused by an impaired driver who ran a red light.

It happened Thursday at 8 p.m. at 35th Avenue and Greenway Road.

The 40-year-old driver of a 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck was speeding east on Greenway Road, according to Officer James Holmes with the Phoenix Police Department.

The pickup driver ran a red light at 35th Avenue and struck a 2013 Hyundai that was traveling north through the intersection. The 35-year-old driver of the Hyundai and the pickup driver were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Officer Holmes said the driver of the Hyundai was placed on life support and is not expected to survive.

The intersection of 35th Avenue and Greenway Road was closed until Friday morning while police investigated the collision.
