PHOENIX (AP) -- Sen. John McCain has been formally named chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
McCain has been the senior Republican on the committee and with the Democrats losing control of the Senate in November's elections he was in line for the top post. The full Senate gave unanimous consent for McCain's post Wednesday evening.
The Arizona senator and former Navy pilot calls it a singular honor to lead the committee. He says the committee's priority is to make sure the military has the leadership, training, and resources to achieve its mission and ensure it members return home safely.
The committee's first hearing under McCain is next week. He's calling former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to testify about global challenges to national security.
