CHANDLER, Ariz. -- A suspect is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Chandler Monday afternoon.

Chandler police officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle that reportedly had been involved in an earlier burglary, according to Sgt. Joe Favazzo.

The suspect led police on a short chase then stopped on Knox Road near Hamilton Street where he reportedly got halfway out of his truck and waited for pursuing officers.

As the officers approached the pickup truck, Favazzo said the suspect began shooting at them "almost like an ambush situation."

Police say the suspect didn't care who might get hurt. "This is a suspect that absolutely has no regard for the citizens or the safety of this community," said Favazzo.

The officers took cover and returned fire, hitting the suspect.

"Very courageously, these officers, that are being fired upon, are able to stop their vehicles, get out of their vehicles, and return fire. So they're very courageous, and very literally went to the gunfire to stop this suspect," said Favazzo.

The suspect then drove a short distance before losing control of the vehicle and it came to a stop.

The suspect was found dead inside the vehicle. Favazzo said it is unknown if the suspect died from police gunfire or a self-inflicted wound.

No officers were injured.

The suspect's name has not been released.
