PHOENIX – A Mesa man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting at a Phoenix apartment complex early Christmas Eve morning.

Torry T. Taylor, 36, faces one count of first-degree murder and one count of misconduct involving weapons. He is being held on $1 million bond.

Phoenix police said several people were seen fleeing an apartment near 40th Street and McDowell Road after residents heard gunshots just after midnight on Dec. 24.

Officers found Leon Hatten on the floor inside the apartment. He suffered several gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

A witness told police that she, Hatten and two other men went to a Phoenix Suns game and a fast-food restaurant on Dec. 23 before coming back to the apartment, according to court documents. She said Taylor, whom she didn't know by name, arrived and Hatten appeared to be uneasy around him.

Taylor accused Hatten of sending someone to his residence to look for him, according to the witness. Hatten told Taylor that he was mistaken and he did not have anybody looking for him.

The witness told police that she left the room then heard gunshots and found Hatten lying on the floor. She said Taylor came back into the apartment and shot Hatten one more time with a black revolver.

Taylor was identified out of a photographic lineup later that day.

Taylor was taken into custody on Friday. He told investigators he had been at Hatten's apartment and was drunk when two men entered and attempted a home invasion. He said shots were fired.

Taylor went to a Mesa hospital with a gunshot wound to his torso and told Mesa police that he had been shot during a dice game.

Taylor denied shooting Hatten.
