PHOENIX -- Several people moved by images of a large crowd of homeless people sleeping in a cold Phoenix parking lot started a campaign to help them.

The lot is one block from the Arizona State Capitol.

"People are definitely unaware of the magnitude of the situation. Hundreds of homeless people every night sleeping in the freezing cold with no blankets, no socks," Chris Hooley said, as he passed out food and blankets to the homeless.

He helped coordinate a Facebook campaign to get others involved.

"It took cold weather for people to really realize how bad it can get down here," Kiera Foltz said. "I'll be perfectly honest, it took cold weather for me to realize how bad it was down here because that's when the pictures surfaced."

She gathered 50 pizzas to bring down Friday night and handed two slices out to anyone who wanted them. She says Papa John's gave them a 50-percent discount.

The volunteers have a coat and blanket drive underway, hoping to make the cold nights on the concrete lot a bit more bearable.

"We're coming back tomorrow with more blankets, as many as we can," Hooley promised.

They have several drop-off locations for anyone who would like to donate:
