Union rejects contract for some Phoenix bus routesPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Members of a union representing drivers on some Phoenix-area bus routes serving thousands of riders have overwhelmingly rejected a contract proposed by the operating company.
The vote this week by members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1433 also authorizes a strike, but officials say that's not going to happen immediately and that there will be discussions with First Transit about returning to the bargaining table.
Health insurance costs and work schedules are issues in the talks.
The contract covers 14 bus routes, including major crosstown ones on Thomas and Indian School roads.
Different contractors provide service on other bus routes in the metro area, so those routes and light rail service would continue to operate normally if eventually there is a strike, though transfers and connections would be affected.
