TEMPE, Ariz. -- A 22-year-old Tempe man died after he was shot during a home invasion Tuesday night, and his attackers are still on the loose.

At least three men forced their way into the home in the area of Rural Road just north of U.S. Highway 60 about 9:30 p.m., Tempe police Lt. Michael Pooley said.

Once inside, the suspects tried to rob the family of three and shot Michael Perez. His wife and 3-year-old son were also inside the home, Pooley said.

Perez was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and later died.

No other injuries were reported.

Pooley said the suspects, described only as Hispanic men, took a quanitity of marijuana before fleeing the scene.

"This violent crime does not appear to be a random act, but a house that was targeted for the marijuana," Pooley said Wednesday morning.

Anyone with information about the home invasion or suspects is asked to call the Tempe Police Department at 480-350-8311, or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS (480-948-6377), or 480-TESTIGO (480-837-8446) for Spanish.
