PHOENIX -- A serious motorcycle accident Monday evening shut down Loop 202 in the westbound lanes at 52nd Street. The road has since reopened.
The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. Officers were trying to pull over a motorcyclist who reportedly was driving at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.
But according to the Department of Public Safety, the driver would not stop and officers pursued him for about 10 minutes. The pursuit ended when that driver lost control and hit a vehicle.
Phoenix Fire units arrived on the scene and found the motorcycle driver alert and talking. The 23-year-old Mesa resident suffered a fracture to his wrist and possibly a broken neck. He had been wearing a helmet.
He was transported to a local trauma center in serious condition.
The Department of Public Safety will be conducting an investigation.
