PHOENIX -- Police are trying to identify a young woman found dead in a Phoenix alley. Her body was discovered near 18th Street and Roeser.

Area residents spotted the woman's body Monday morning. At first, neighbors thought the young woman might be sleeping. But as they approached, they saw what police describe as obvious signs of trauma.

"She's out there, and it's unfortunate that things like this are happening in our neighborhood," says neighbor Felicia Daniels.

Witnesses initially said the victim could be in her teens. But police say she could be as old as her 20s. There was no identification on the body.

"We only know that she is in her early to mid-20s and that she has obviously been killed," says Phoenix Police officer James Holmes. "We don't know at this point in the investigation if she was killed at this location or somewhere else."

"It hurts me it could have been my grand babies, anybody," said another resident. "Just hurts. Looks like no more than 17 or 18. Young."

Homicide detectives were on the scene most of the day.

"Our biggest concern right now is that here is someone out there, right now, this holiday period, that is missing a loved one, missing a friend," says Holmes.

We asked investigators whether this might be linked to the disappearance of a young woman in the west Valley, but at this point they do not believe the two cases are related.
