YCSO deputy fatally shoots man in DeweyPosted: Updated:
DEWEY, Ariz. – A deputy with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office fatally shot an armed man at a home in Dewey on Sunday.
Deputies were responding to reports of an armed suicidal man inside a residence in the 1200 block of Oxbow Drive in the Prescott Country Club.
YCSO spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said the initial call to the sheriff's office came from a neighbor who had just been in phone contact with one of the suspect's relatives. The family member, who does not live in the area, was on the phone with the suspect as he expressed threats of suicide while apparently in possession of a firearm.
D'Evelyn said Daniel Gray, 51, pointed a handgun at the deputies as they approached the front door. The deputies then tried to convince Gray to surrender the gun.
"Gray refused and when he threatened the deputies with the firearm, one of the deputies fired in self-defense striking the suspect," D'Evelyn said in a media release.
Gray later died at a local hospital.
D'Evelyn said it has been determined that Gray did not fire any rounds.
The Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident.
The name of the deputy has not been released.
