PHOENIX -- The day after Christmas is a busy shopping day for returning gifts, using gift cards, and taking advantage of the big after Christmas sales.

"Right now, I see 50 percent off," said Bernie Varosky. "I need a tree topper angel, so I found that. I found an elf on the shelf. I need some boxes for ornaments. Just kind of going through to see what's here that I can't live without."

Another big sales item on the day after Christmas is wrapping paper.

"Because of the smoking deals, you can get a really good price on gift wrapping paper," said Christina Klein-Ellis.

So shoppers were stocking up Friday.

"It's just a lot cheaper to purchase this kind of stuff the day after," said Braulio Quinones.

"We have a lot of kids, so we usually stick a bunch of stuff in the closet," said Jeff Porr.

Porr said he has seven kids and 10 grandkids.

"There's quite a few of them," he said.

So Porr was shopping with his wife and daughter to make sure they took advantage of the deals.

"She does pretty good about getting stuff ahead of time and trying to make that dollar stretch as far as she can, so I'm glad for that," Porr said.

Other shoppers were spending gift cards.

If you're strapped for cash and would prefer to sell your gift cards, there are several websites that offer to buy them but not at face value.

"Would go up to maybe 96 percent, but some of the cards were only up to 70 percent, so you just have to be careful on what you're going to get and make sure that’s what you want to do," Varosky said.

Not everyone thinks it's a good idea.

"I wouldn't do that just to get the money. ... I would go and use it where it was from, and I want the full value," said Varosky.

"We usually spend our gift cards unless it was something really weird," said Chris Heinze.

"I kind of like to use them,” said Kristin Lesselyong.
