The National Weather Service office in Phoenix reported Phoenix Sky Harbor reached a morning low of 38 degrees Friday, dubbing Dec. 26 the coldest morning so far of 2014. The second coldest temperature in Phoenix was 39, which was reached on Jan. 6, according to NWS meteorologists.

Forecasters issued Freeze Warnings for NW Maricopa County and Pinal County from midnight to 8 a.m. Saturday. Those with sensitive outdoor plants, exposed pipes and pets living outside should take precautions to protect them.

A broad low pressure system tracking through the region is to blame for ushering unseasonably cold, dry air from the northwest. Temperatures are expected to run about 10 degrees below average across the Valley Friday afternoon, and slightly rebounding this weekend.

Look for a high of 55 Friday afternoon in Phoenix with an overnight low of 35. Suburbs outside the Phoenix-metro may dip into the upper 20s. Saturday afternoon, look for a high of about 58, with a high of 59 Sunday.

The seasonal average for this time of the year in Phoenix is 65.

Lows will remain in the 30s through the weekend. Daytime highs in the low 60s will return to the Valley Monday and Tuesday before a storm system moves into Arizona for New Year's Eve or New Year’s Day. This will drop temperatures again and bring rain to the Valley. Stay tuned as the 3TV Forecasters track the winter weather.
