Woman burned trying to escape apartment fire

PHOENIX -- A woman was badly burned while trying to escape her burning apartment.

It happened at about midnight near 24th Street and Camelback Road.

Flames were shooting from a ground-floor window when firefighters arrived on the scene.

Early indications are that the woman, who is believed to be in her 40s, collapsed while trying to get out. Firefighters found her on the floor near a bathroom.

She was rushed to a local hospital. At last check, she was in serious condition.

The unit above the one that caught fire was damaged as well, mostly by water and smoke.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
