PHOENIX -- Police say a barricade situation at a Phoenix apartment has ended safely with the suspect in custody.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Aaron Ernsberger said firefighters received a call Thursday afternoon from a concerned citizen to conduct a welfare check at a home near 17th and Missouri avenues.

Ernsberger said when fire crews knocked on the door, a man came out and pointed a handgun at them.

"The fire crews at that point backed away, they tried to get away, and the guy came back out after them," he said. "They had to seek refuge behind the fire truck and obviously called for Phoenix Police Department for their support, and they had a rapid response."
