PHOENIX -- A woman has died after being struck by a vehicle in a Phoenix intersection Sunday morning, according to police.

Phoenix Police Lt. Chuck Williams said the woman was in a crosswalk at 12th Street and Northern Avenue when she was hit. It was not immediately clear whether she had the signal to walk.

She died at a hospital after being transported in extremely critical condition, according to police.

The collision is under investigation, but Williams said it does not appear that speed or impairment were factors.

"Be careful of pedestrians. Always pay attention to who's in the crosswalk, and be safe out there," Williams said.

Police closed the intersection to investigate.
