PHOENIX -- A north Phoenix apartment building that was under construction was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning.

Phoenix firefighters responded to the blaze near Cave Creek Road and Union Hills Drive around 4 a.m. and found the building fully engulfed in flames.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Benjamin Santillan said firefighters immediately took a defensive strategy to protect nearby homes. Several residents in homes south of the fire were evacuated due to the heat.

The Phoenix Fire Department had about 75 firefighters and supportive personnel on scene of the second-alarm fire, according to Santillan.

The cause is under investigation.
