Kids in need shop for gifts for just $1 at 'Santa's Workshop'

PHOENIX -- Students from schools across the Valley are getting a Christmas surprise that's sure to make their holidays happy: a visit to Santa's Workshop to shop for Christmas gifts for their families.
Technically, "Santa's Workshop" is a St. Vincent de Paul thrift shop at 32nd Street and Bell Road. But it's still a treasure trove of unique and affordable Christmas gifts.
1,300 students in north Phoenix and Palomino school will get to shop in the store on Thursday for only $1. But here's the catch: everything they buy must be a gift for another person.
"They shop for one dollar," says Ed Dubiel from St. Vincent de Paul. "They get to pick out two gifts, for their mother, their father, their siblings or whomever."
Santa is also handing out goodie bags and taking pictures with the students. And the kids will be singing Christmas carols.
"This started about 25 years ago," Dubiel says. "It's grown, 25 years later and 25,000 kids plus. And they're still shopping."
