PHOENIX (AP) -- Phoenix police say an officer fatally wounded an 18-year-old soldier clad in fatigues who shot a young girl as he tried to get into her home.
Authorities say the man fired his weapon Tuesday, wounding a 12-year-old girl on the other side of the home's door. That's when the officer shot the soldier who was home on leave.
The girl is hospitalized but her injuries are not life-threatening.
Authorities say they tried to stop him from entering the home after a 14-year-old girl, the 12-year-old's sister, had called 911 to say she was fearful of him.
Police say there had been inappropriate contact between the man and the older girl.
Police Sgt. Trent Crump says the man had just completed Army basic training. His name wasn't released.
