Cashing in on gas savings during the holidaysPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- With Christmas just over a week away, everyone is looking to save cents where they can.
With gas prices at a five-year low, there are plenty of options out there, but which one makes the most sense economically?
Michelle Donati with Triple-A says consumers can easily be misled with enticingly low gas prices like $1.99 at the Valero on the corner of 20th Street and Osborn.
"Don't drive across town to save 10, 20, 30 cents," Donati said. "If you're going to sit there idling for five or 10 minutes, consider you are burning gas and money in the process."
In other words, be strategic about waiting for cheaper gas, or simply don't wait at all and actually save money in the long run.
"You don't want to drive across town to get that gas, just like you don't want to drive to that big box store if it's out of your way to fuel up," said Donati.
Speaking of big box stores, Donati says Costco and Sam's Club members will often use gas gift cards to save a few dollars, which is a good idea if you're in the neighborhood.
But Donati says the number one way to maximize fuel efficiency is to be cognizent of your driving habits.
