TEMPE, Ariz. -- Hope you've got all your holiday packages either in the mail or ready to mail soon. That's because Monday is expected to be the busiest shipping day of the year.

This year, FedEx will ship a projected 22.6 million packages on December 15, and more than 290 million packages during the peak season.

Workers at FedEx hubs all over the country have been busy for weeks gearing up for their busiest time of the year.

"This is our Super Bowl," says Randy Gordon with FedEx. "We prepare for this all year. This time of year we have all hands on deck. We don't have anyone on vacation. Days off are at a minimum."

It's not just FedEx that's busy. This is also expected to be the busiest shipping day for the US Postal Service. Many locations are offering extended hours and some Sunday hours to accommodate the crowds.

"It's terrific; I'm surprised it was open," said one Phoenix resident. "I came to check my mail and I was able to buy stamps and ship my Christmas presents."

Self-service kiosks are also available at some locations. At these kiosks, customers can buy postage and ship small- and medium-sized parcels using a debit or credit card.

Among the locations in the metro area offering round-the-clock kiosk access are the following Post Offices: Chandler Andersen Springs Station, 1900 W. Carla Vista Dr.; Glendale Arrowhead Station, 19801 N. 59th Ave.; Mesa Main Post Office, 135 N. Center St.; Scottsdale Air Park Station, 8175 E. Evans Rd.; and Tempe South Station, 8205 S. Priest Dr.

Customers can look up additional kiosk locations and even purchase postage online by visiting www.usps.com.

The USPS Phoenix Processing and Distribution Center is expected to handle around three million pieces of mail Monday alone. That's 12 percent more than a normal day.

So how about some tips to make the shipping process easier? "You want to make sure you package everything tightly," says Julie Utley with USPS customer relations. "You want to use the foam, and you want to make sure everything doesn't shft around inside." She also advises customers to make sure to include a return address inside the box in case the shipping label is damaged.
