PHOENIX -- A woman and her 2-month-old daughter were found shot in an Ahwatukee neighborhood on Thursday afternoon, according to Sgt. Jonathan Howard with the Phoenix Police Department.

It happened at 18th Avenue and Liberty Lane. That is on the south side of South Mountain, near 17th Avenue and Pecos Road.

The woman was shot in the back of the head, according to a Phoenix Fire Department spokesman. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Police have identified her as Khalli Lawrence, 19.

Lawrence's baby was reportedly shot in the leg. Howard said the child is improving and is expected to survive.

The mother and baby were found on a footpath along a wash.

"An area resident heard a baby crying," Howard said. "He looked down and saw a woman laying on the ground with a baby next to her. He found that they appeared to be injured, both of them, called the police department, called the fire department."

Police are asking the public to call with any information related to the crime, victims or suspect. They also are looking for information related to any unusual vehicles that may have been seen in the area.

Howard said Lawrence lived in the Valley but not near the neighborhood where the crime occurred.

"We walk these neighborhoods almost nightly," said Ahwatukee resident Andrew Allen. "We have pets and kids and, you know, to have this happen 500 yards from your home is pretty nerve-racking."

Police do not believe there is cause for alarm for area residents.
