PHOENIX -- Rain chances by the weekend are increasing for metro Phoenix as a cold front approaches from the Pacific Ocean.

Besides the chances for rain, we’ll see high temps drop from the upper 70s to the low 60s by Saturday, a big change.

The storm system will begin by bringing very windy conditions to much of the state on Friday along with increasing clouds.

Late in the day and Friday night, we’ll see scattered rain and snow showers develop in northern Arizona. Overnight Friday into Saturday morning is the best chance for rain around metro Phoenix. We could see around half an inch of rain in many Valley locations.

In the high country, the accumulating snow level will be around 6,000 feet by Saturday. We’ll see up to 3 inches of snow at that elevation. Above 8,000 feet, we could see 3 to 6 inches of snow. The key will be how much moisture the system drags into the state and when we get the temperature drop.

The system will be in and out of the state fairly quickly. By Saturday afternoon, expect sunshine around the Valley. By Sunday, we should see metro area highs back into the low 70s.
