EL MIRAGE, Ariz. -- A dog was killed when an El Mirage home caught fire Friday night, according to the fire department.

Firefighters were called to the home shortly before 9 p.m. after a woman told a 911 operator that the key to her front door wasn't working and she could hear smoke detectors beeping.

Fire department spokesman Ed Cunningham said the incident was balanced to a working house fire after crews noticed smoke coming from the vents and windows upstairs. Crews from Peoria, Sun City, Sun City West and Surprise responded.

When firefighters entered the home, they encountered heavy smoke. Cunningham said the fire was 10 feet from the front door and spreading rapidly.

Firefighters rescued two turtles from the home but were unable to resuscitate the family's dog.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family with housing and short-term needs.
