PHOENIX (AP) -- A former student teacher at Tempe High School has been sentenced to three years in prison and lifetime probation in a sex case involving a student.

A Maricopa County Superior Court spokeswoman says 27-year-old Joel Calderon was sentenced Friday by Judge Sam Myers.

Calderon pleaded guilty in October to three counts of attempt to commit sexual conduct with a minor

Tempe police arrested Calderon late last year after learning about a possible relationship between him and a female student at Tempe High.

Police were initially contacted by school administrators.

Court documents say the alleged instances of sexual contact occurred in early November 2013 and Calderon was fired from his position at Tempe High.
