PHOENIX -- A man was injured in a fight with a store clerk after allegedly trying to rob a Phoenix business at gunpoint.

Police were called to Discount King Market near 21st and Adams streets around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday and found the 29-year-old suspect fighting with the 49-year-old clerk.

The suspect reportedly brandished a handgun at the clerk, who was alone at the market, and demanded cash. When the clerk said he did not have access to the money, the suspect allegedly began stealing computer equipment while still pointing the gun at the clerk.

According to police, the clerk grabbed the handgun and a fight ensued. The gun discharged but no one was struck.

The clerk was able to obtain the gun, and the two men continued fighting until police arrived.

Police said the suspect was bleeding profusely from his head and face. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The clerk was not injured in the fight.

Police said the suspect will be booked into jail on suspicion of armed robbery after he recovers. They are not releasing the suspect's name until he is booked.
