PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has ordered flags lowered across the state in honor of a Navajo Nation police officer who died over the weekend.

Tribal spokesman Deswood Tome says Officer Ernest Montoya likely suffered a heart attack at the wheel of his vehicle Sunday. He says Montoya had been transporting a man he arrested to a police substation in Dilkon when he crashed into an embankment.

His passenger was not injured.

The 54-year-old Montoya had served with the Navajo Department of Public Safety since 1993.

Brewer says flags will be lowered until sunset Tuesday in honor of him.

Funeral services are pending.
