MESA, Ariz. -- Two homes were damaged when a fire that started in a shed spread early Tuesday morning.

The fire was in the 3800 block of East Diamond Avenue, near Val Vista Drive and Broadway Road.

Firefighters from Mesa, Gilbert and Superstition Fire were called to the scene. They had some difficulty locating the source of the fire because there was so much smoke in the neighborhood.

The fire spread from the shed to a tree and then into the attic of one of the homes. Firefighters were forced to back off when the roof collapsed on that home.

Three adults got out of the home safely. Firefighters rescued two dogs.

The other house has some minor damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
