GILBERT, Ariz. -- A woman was caught on surveillance tape stealing a package from a Gilbert man's front porch last Tuesday.
What she didn't know was that the man is a detective with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
"I don't think they even realized who I am or what I do," Doug Matteson said. He had installed surveillance cameras on his property, something the thief didn't even care to look for.
The lady was riding a beach cruiser bike with a baby carrier when she noticed the package on the front porch.
She stumbled, but then walked up to the front door, laid her bike along the house, took the package, and rode away.
"She pulled her bike, walking it right over my front grass, breaking my sprinkler head," Matteson said.
Matteson had been waiting for a package from the East Coast.
The woman noticed that the UPS truck was in the neighborhood and followed it just out of sight.
"She took it upon herself to follow the UPS truck but stay just out of sight," Matteson said.
This incident is a reminder to take extra precaution this holiday season when sending and receiving packages.
