PHOENIX -- A longstanding Phoenix business was severely damaged by fire Sunday afternoon.

When firefighters arrived at Family Van RV near Cave Creek and Mountain View roads, they encountered heavy smoke.

After breaking through security devices and entering the building, firefighters went into defensive mode and fought the flames from outside due to the smoke.

Business owner Pat Finnegan said the building contained mostly RV parts. He has been in business for 31 years.

"You put your whole life into something and, you know, it means more to me than just the store," he said. "I put a lot of work and effort into it."

Phoenix firefighters say the building appears to be a total loss. Finnegan was waiting to hear back from his insurance company.

Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause.
