Man shot, killed at Phoenix car wash

PHOENIX -- A man is in custody after he allegedly shot and killed another man at a Phoenix car wash Sunday.

It happened around 2:30 p.m. near Third Street and McDowell Road.

Police said that after the shooting, the suspect walked a short distance from the scene and sat down under a tree with his gun.

"He walked away from the scene and he eventually stopped and sat down in a grassy area with his weapon which was a handgun, and we thought we could have a violent encounter but he surrendered without incident," said Lt. Pat Tortorici with Phoenix police.

Police said there were about 12 to 16 witnesses, and one witness told police after the suspect shot the victim, he told witnesses to call the cops.

Family said the victim and suspect are cousins, but the victim is referred to as "uncle."

"They were nice with each other, so that's why we want to know why my brother did that. Why?" said Wendi Pacheco, the suspect's sister.

Police said the suspect and the victim lived together and there may have been an ongoing dispute between them

The victim, 54-year-old David Pacheco-Chavez, worked at the car wash.

The alleged killer is 19-year-old Manuel Pacheco. He was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder.
