TEMPE, Ariz. -- The eastbound Loop 202 has reopened at 52nd Street after a three-vehicle accident Saturday evening.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said a car swerved to avoid another car that had run out of gas and then collided with a motorcycle.

The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital in serious condition. DPS said he had head injuries and was not wearing a helmet.

The female passenger on the motorcycle had a few scrapes. The occupants in the cars were not injured, according to DPS.

Loop 202 eastbound reopened around 9 p.m.
