Man burned after car hits pole, catches fire on SR 51

PHOENIX -- A man suffered third-degree burns to his arms and legs after his vehicle hit a pole and caught fire Thursday afternoon.

The Phoenix Fire Department responded to the single-vehicle collision on state Route 51 at Greenway Road shortly after 1 p.m.

Bystanders removed the driver from the burning car before firefighters arrived, according to Capt. Benjamin Santillan.

The man in his 20s was transported to the Maricopa Integrated Health System’s Arizona Burn Center in critical condition.

The collision is under investigation by the Department of Public Safety.
