GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Locally owned Harkins Theatres announced Wednesday that it will build a new movie theater in Goodyear. Groundbreaking on the 16-screen megaplex at Estrella Falls is slated for early next year, with an opening date in spring 2016.

Estrella Falls is located at McDowell Road and Pebble Creek Parkway, just off Interstate 10.

The Market at Estrella Falls power center opened in 2008. The intent was to develop the 300-acre mixed-use site into a regional mall. Westcor put that plan on hold when the economy took a dive.

Macerich acquired Westor and its properties, including Estrella Falls, over the summer. The company says it is dedicated to the project.

"We are wholeheartedly committed in our plans to develop the regional mall and to the overall master-plan of Estrella Falls," the Estrella Falls website reads.

The state-of-the-art movie theater is the first phase of that plan.

"One of the recurring themes we hear from residents is to try to bring in more entertainment options to Goodyear," said Mayor Georgia Lord.

"It's exciting to bring this highly anticipated theatre to Goodyear," Dan Harkins, owner and CEO of Harkins Theatres, said in a news release. "It has taken us longer than we wanted, but I guarantee this theatre will have been worth the wait."

A new Cine Capri, the largest in the state, will be part of Estrella Fall 16. The theater also will have a bar in the lobby.

At this point, there is no timeline for the rest of the development, which leaves Arrowhead Towne Center and Westgate City Center as the nearest mall options for Goodyear residents.

Based in Scottsdale, Harkins Theatres has been a family owned business since Red Harkins founded it in 1933. Today, the company has 30 locations in five states, making it the fifth-largest theater chain in North America.
