PHOENIX – A fire at a Phoenix aluminum plant is under investigation.

Firefighters responded to a structure fire at Sapa Extrusions near Jefferson Street and 51st Avenue around noon Friday.

Crews found smoke coming from a large commercial building and active fire on the roof, according to Capt. Benjamin Santillan with the Phoenix Fire Department.

A hazmat team was called in because of a hazardous materials threat.

"Immediately what we try to do is find the responsible party because we want as much information as possible about this building and what's actually in it," Santillan said.

Firefighters knew they needed a hazmat team based on signage at the plant.

Santillan said the company melts metals and firefighters were unable to use water due to reactivity and chance of explosion.

Crews were able to cover the machines and extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
